PETE SWANSON is a New York-based musician, once a member of the exhilarating noise duo Yellow Swans, he’s been making plenty of solo music since they disbanded in 2008. Straddling a line between free guitar noise and singed electronics, Swanson's game-changing album on Type last year, ‘Man With Potential’, showed that Pete had moved into a techno multiverse, where the dank pulsing soundscapes that helped birth his old band have only got wilder. Earlier this year, Swanson continued to explore his deformed warehouse techno sound with 'Punk Authority'. This four-track stomper for Software Recording Co. is by far his most damaged solo offering to date. With a sly nod to Police Academy, 'Punk Authority' launches into a barrage of debauched, regressive noise punctuated by the kind of beats you’d more readily expect to find on an Underground Resistance 12” (And that’s as effortlessly engaging as it sounds). Using a deceptively simple synth/tape setup, Swanson siphons his club constructions through a coarse mix of saturation and overdrive, resulting in something aggressive yet effortlessly foot pushing. Swanson has successfully re-tooled a genre to fit his needs, and  'Punk Authority' is his chance to really crack his knuckles. It might not be easy listening, but who said life had to be easy?

HELM is the solo project of Luke Younger, one half of the London/Berlin noise/drone duo Birds Of Delay, and label boss at Alter Records (Hieroglyphic Being, ELG, Bomber Jackets, Liberez). Younger's compositions build a dense aural landscape that touches on musique concrete, uncomfortable sound poetry, noise, and hallucinatory drones. He recently released 'Impossible Symmetry', his third full-length record, on the Berlin-based PAN label. It marks a new chapter in the artists' canon as it's his first to be informed by live performance rather than studio experimentation, incorporating more extensive use of electronic elements and moments of rhythmic dark ambience recalling the outputs from early Coil and Cabaret Voltaire at times. This sound is steered through a melange of fringe territories: glacial drone meditations, reconfigured gamelan clusters, and howling walls of organised feedback, all coalesced in a post-industrial fashion with a commitment to homemade exploratory zeal. Look out for new EP ‘The Hollow Organ’ out next week also on PAN.

DAVE CURRIE is a New Zealander living presently in London, lining up stammering drum machines, damaged synth noise and spooked slow-motion atmospheres into a deliriously heady cloud of tripped out dance music. It's cryptic, propulsive and a force unto itself, listen loud!
