Wolf Eyes tomorrow and The Space Lady next week in London!

Morning all!
Thanks go out to all of you for coming to see Quintron & Pussycat last weekend, I think I need new shoes and a new brain now from all that dancing around the room! What a show! Talking of incredible shows (did you see what I did there? Seamless!) tomorrow we have Wolf Eyes and No Form performing at the Tufnell Park Dome. If you’re a fan of mutated punk, freaked noise and trip metal in sound/aesthetic then you’re in for a banquet! Tickets are £10 on the door and live music will commence around 8.45pm.

Unfortunately Aaron Dilloway is no longer able to perform tomorrow night because of complications with his Maltese visa which stop him from leaving his temporary island home, but we hope to have him come and play again in the not too distant future. Tomorrow will be colossal and we hope you can join us!

The full listing for that show can be found below, along with news of next week’s concert for intergalactic traveler, The Space Lady. Susan will be performing her haunting, reconstructed pop alongside acoustic troubadour Daniel Bachman, and the folk polemics of Eric Schneider. All looks set to be another fantastic evening, read on for the full story.

This week we also confirmed a ‘fan show’ for Protomartyr in July too at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, onsale now, take note!

WOLF EYES are the foremost trip metal band in the multiverse. Whilst their infamous blistering noise propelled them from being a dank Ann Arbour, Michigan basement sensation to the upper ranks of Sub Pop, their music has since mutated into a meticulous cudgel of creeping dread, halting rhythms and snarled melodics. From touring with Sonic Youth and Andrew W.K., Wolf Eyes have crossed  borders into popularity which few other such confrontational units of their ilk have been able to and kept straight and narrow on their blazing path. Originally started as the solo project of former Nautical Almanac member Nate Young, he was soon joined by Aaron Dilloway in 1998, John Olson in 2000 then Mike Connelly and now Crazy Jim. They has released over 150 recordings in their relatively short lifespan, on labels such as Bulb Records, Troubleman Unlimited, Fusetron, and Sub Pop, as well as on Olson’s American Tapes label, Dilloway’s Hanson Records, Mike Connelly’s Gods of Tundra label and Nate Young’s AA Records. This show sees Wolf Eyes play a headline show drawing from their stunning new album “I am a problem: mind in pieces”, out now on Jack White’s Third Man Records.

NO FORM invoke a dark portal, bathing in the murk, devoid of all light. This is punk, as antagonistic and cleansing as it ever can be. No Form’s notorious live power is finally captured on their debut LP (co-released by Reagent Records and Muscle Horse), with four shorter pulsating numbers on Side A and one long jam on Side B that approaches the outer limits. Shrill, disconcerting guitar leads and tormented vocals slither over an affirmative pummel that exists at the meeting point between outlier hardcore punk and proto-industrial at its most confrontational. Deceptively catchy thrashing coexists with sinister, siren-call sax wails. This is music for the perennially despondent, music as life ritual.

THE SPACE LADY began her odyssey on the streets of San Francisco in the late 70s, playing versions of contemporary pop music an accordion and dressed flamboyantly, transmitting messages of peace and harmony. Following the theft of her accordion, The Space Lady invested in a then-new Casio keyboard, birthing an otherworldly new dimension to popular song that has captured the imaginations of the underground and its lead exponents ever since, with the likes of John Maus, Erol Alkan and Kutmah being devotees. Of her early street sets, only one recording was made, self-released originally on cassette and then transferred to a homemade CD. "The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits" released in 2014 through Night School features the best of these recordings - mostly covers but with some originals - pressed on vinyl for the first time and features archival photographs and liner notes from The Space Lady herself. “Greatest Hits” contains The Space Lady’s personal favourites; her haunting take on The Electric Prunes’ “I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night),” a frantic “Ballroom Blitz” amidst other reconstructed pop music. Following on from this wonderful record, The Space Lady released last year a split LP with the Burnt Ones on Castle Face records which included her spectral take on ‘Across The Universe’.

DANIEL BACHMAN is a 6-string and lap guitar player from Fredericksburg, Virginia currently living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. From 2008 to present he’s been releasing material of almost exclusively an instrumental nature while touring everywhere from Istanbul to Los Angeles. He has been playing what he describes as “psychedelic appalachia” since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs and LPs for the past three years, with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. Touring off and on since the age of 17, Bachman has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose, for whom he fashioned the artwork for the posthumous release of ‘Luck In The Valley’. His newest effort is the full length LP ‘River’ (Three Lobed), and simply stated it’s his best album. Unconventionally, it opens with the breathtaking and robust fourteen minute epic “won’t you cross over to that other shore.” Proving his ability to write music that keeps the listener engaged (even across such a long tune), Bachman successfully uses tempo changes, varied picking patterns and melodic exploration, all without ever getting lost in pointless improvisation too far from the overall theme. Bachman takes the listener on an aural journey through the back roads of the foothills of the blue-ridge to calm coastal waters.

New Deerhoof album, plus upcoming shows for Quintron & Miss Pussycat and Wolf Eyes!

Hello again!
We’re over the moon here at Upset The Rhythm as this June we will be releasing a new Deerhoof album entitled 'The Magic'. After all the accolades, what’s a legendary band left to do? Rent out an abandoned office space in the middle of the desert in New Mexico in lieu of a regular recording studio, go in with little or no preconceived notions of what would happen, set up, plug in and get loud! After seven days Deerhoof had found (you guessed it) ‘The Magic’, a raw and refreshing wallop of an album about leaving your comfort zone and finding a pineapple.

With this new album, Deerhoof have dreamed up an alchemy of '77 punk, pop, glam, hair metal, doo-wop, hip hop, and R&B, late-night car rides, long days, spandex, shadows, and attitude. Poetry into noise, friendship into rock band.
The Magic’ will be available on white 180g vinyl housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve, we're also releasing a CD and digital version too. These are possible to pre-order from our webshop now, including options for you to bag a bonus 'covers tape' of Deerhoof playing some of their favourite songs of others (Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Public Enemy, David Bowie, etc). Listen to lead track 'Plastic Thrills' now to get ahead of the curve!

We’re also going to take this opportunity to alert you to our next two shows which take place on the following two Fridays. Tomorrow we head towards DIY Space For London for super rare appearance from underground party legends Quintron & Miss Pussycat. Self-proclaimed purveyors of ‘New Orleans Swamp Tech’ music, Q & Miss P start their phenomenal live show with a 20 minute puppet show, setting the surreal tone for the subsequent dance party revelation! Conceptual kindred spirits Ravioli Me Away will also be performing, so we’re in good hands from the off.

Then one week tomorrow, three dark moons will align over the Tufnell Park Dome for our colossal concert for trip-metal forebears Wolf Eyes, which also sees the rapturous Aaron Dilloway and out-punk thrashers No Form both performing too.

We have tickets for both events available in advance, the links for both accompany full listings found below.

In other show-related news, this week we have confirmed a special joint-headline concert for the incomparable talents of Asiq Nargile and Heather Leigh this August at The Forge.

We’ve also set up two events in June at Servant Jazz Quarters that have been announced these last few days, the first is for Los Angeles Free Music Society paragons Joe & Rick Potts & Vetza, known for their electrifying work in early-noise outfit Airway. The second showcases Maryjane from VEXX’s new swoon-pop synth project CC Dust with Static Palm in support.

If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also added Australian punks Deaf Wish as support to The Oblivians in July.

QUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT have been making genre-defying noise and “Swamp-Tech” dance music in New Orleans for over fifteen years. The majority of their ten full-length albums have the psychedelic soul of New Orleans garage R&B filtered through a tough distorted Hammond B-3 and a cache of self-made electronic instruments. Quintron has also released strange soundscapes based on inner-city field recordings of frogs and neighborhood ambiance. Quintron regards his most significant creation to be his patented instrument called the DRUM BUDDY, a light activated analog synthesizer that creates murky, low-fidelity, rhythmic patterns.

Miss Pussycat, otherwise known as Panacea Theriac, is a New Orleans based puppeteer. Born in Antlers, Oklahoma, she began learning puppetry at the Christian Puppet Youth Ministry at the First Baptist Church of Antlers. She began her professional career in New Orleans and assisted in founding the influential night club “Pussycat Caverns.” For the past fifteen years she has travelled internationally conducting puppet shows in rock clubs and at international festivals. She is the President of Rhinestone Records and produces vinyl LPs of her puppet’s many bands. The Quintron and Miss Pussycat live show is one of barely controlled electronic chaos, crazed dance beats, small explosions, colourful clothes, and entertaining puppet stories; in short always a revelation.

RAVIOLI ME AWAY are a dangerously ambitious and delusional all-girl jazzy, post-pop-punk, hip-funk outfit with a stylistic theme spanning all past, present and future human cultures and subcultures. Consider vintage Bananarama played with twice the sass and urgency, only reflected in the eyes of a much overworked and downright exhausted Julie Burchill on acid. Check out their excellent debut album on Good Job and their split LP with Dog Chocolate on Upset The Rhythm now for proof of their genius.

AARON DILLOWAY hails from Michigan, and is perhaps best known as a founding member of formidable trip metal gods Wolf Eyes. Since he left that band a decade ago, he’s delicately extended his exploration of tape manipulations, ritualised performance and found-sound appropriation, simultaneously bringing warmth and acidity, high-end assault and dreamy dislocation in a way that could be said to unwittingly form a bridge between Robert Ashley and hauntology. A serial collaborator, he’s also made great records in cahoots with Jason Lescalleet, C. Spencer Yeh and many more and been compared to Maryanne Amacher and Nurse With Wound. Currently based in Malta this show follows on from his recent electrifying appearances in London with Sissy Spacek, Vicky Langan and Evan Parker. https://www.facebook.com/Aaron-Dilloway-136620113037549/

JOE & RICK POTTS & VETZA heading to London this June!

Really pleased to announce this morning a concert for the Joe Potts, Rick Potts and Vetza on June 14th in London. Aside from being founding members of Los Angeles Free Music Society, Joe and Rick also performed in legendary, early-noise group Airway, which Vetza’s electrifying vocals contributed much to, amid the subliminal messages, crashing drums and walls of tape delay.

Airway is the brainchild of Joe Potts who controls the flow of chaos from the mixing desk, he has also recorded several solo documents and played in Extended Organ with Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy. Rick Potts is a multi-instrumentalist and visual artist, he played mandolin/guitar in Airway and appeared in Solid Eye and Dinosaurs With Horns, both with Joseph Hammer. The evening will begin with a screening of ‘LAFMS: how low can you go?’. A short film portrait of the Los Angeles Free Music Society. These irreverent, LA-based experimental musicians have been fearlessly exploring sound since the early 1970’s. The collective is bonded by friendship and a love for blowing apart boundaries. The influence LAFMS has had on the explosion of international DIY culture is immeasurable. Explicitly acknowledged as a motivation for the emergence of the Japanese noise scene in the 1980s, as well as being cited specifically by the likes of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and John Olson (Wolf Eyes), the collective that emerged in LA in 1973 resulted in countless adventurous music lovers tasting the delights of a new kind of creative freedom and getting out there and doing it for themselves.

Heather Leigh and Asiq Nargile to play London this August!

We're extremely excited for this meeting of minds!
 Upset The Rhythm presents…

HEATHER LEIGH
ASIQ NARGILE

Thursday 4 August
The Forge, 3-7 Delancey Street, Camden, NW1 7NL
7pm | £10 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/358631
HEATHER LEIGH is the daughter of a coal miner, weaving a trail from West Virginia to Texas and now residing in Scotland. Heather travels the vast unexplored reaches of pedal steel guitar. Her playing is as physical as it is phantom, combining spontaneous compositions with a feel for the full interaction of flesh with hallucinatory power sources. With a rare combination of sensitivity and strength, Leigh’s steel mainlines sanctified slide guitar and deforms it using hypnotic tone-implosions, juggling walls of bleeding amp tone with choral vocal constructs and wrenching single note ascensions.

In late 2015, Heather Leigh released her first proper studio album, I Abused Animal on Stephen O’Malley & Peter Rehberg’s Ideologic Organ/Editions Mego labels to widespread acclaim. Renowned as a fearless free improviser, I Abused Animal is a breakthrough work showcasing Leigh’s songwriting prowess, foregrounding her stunning voice and her innovations for the pedal steel guitar. Warmly recorded in a secret location in the English countryside, the album transmutes the power of her captivating live performances to a studio setting, capturing her tactile playing in full clarity while making devastating use of volume and space. Heather Leigh explores themes of abuse, sexual instinct, vulnerability, memory, shadow, fantasy, cruelty and projection across the album’s psychedelic hymnals. At times the intimacy of the recordings makes you feel like she’s singing directly into your ear, playing just for you.

ASIQ NARGILE aka Nargile Mehtiyeva was born in Tbilisi and is now based in the Borcali region of Southern Georgia. She has been playing saz (long-neck lute) and singing since the age of 15. Fluent in Azerbaijani, Georgian, and Russian, Nargile represents the cosmopolitan heritage of old Tbilisi, a city once known as a meeting point for multilingual aşıq bards who would travel through the region serving as conduits for news, ideas, music and culture. A powerful solo performer, her vocal recital of epic folk poetry is by turns ecstatic and deeply expressive, and is interspersed with bursts of virtuosic, highly ornamented saz.

Equally comfortable performing moving laments or upbeat folk dances, Nargile is currently the only female aşıq living and performing in the ethnic Azeri region of Georgia, and has been teaching the art to new generations. Thanks to the efforts of The Sayat Nova Project,  a non-profit group aiming to help preserve and promote the diverse musical dialects of the Caucasus, European audiences can now experience the elusive, hypnotic beauty of Nargile’s music for themselves. A recording of her live performance at Cafe OTO will be released soon, following on from a successful UK tour with kindred folk channeller Richard Dawson.

Upcoming concerts for Quintron and Wolf Eyes!

Afternoon everyone!

I trust your dodging the April showers with flair, as we seem to have all seasons at once thrown at us today! Some more predictable forecasting comes in the shape of our live music program that sees us organising a show next Friday at DIY Space For London for underground party legends Quintron & Miss Pussycat.

A must for anyone who loves offbeat, dreamlike puppetry as much as dancing the room to ruin, this show also features conceptual kindred spirits Ravioli Me Away and looks set to soar. Quintron & Miss Pussycat concerts are rarer than hen’s teeth outside of New Orleans, so I can’t emphasize enough how special this will be.

Talking of one off events, our final show of the month features trip metal pioneers Wolf Eyes reunited with their prodigal tape-n-mic gnawer Aaron Dilloway in support.

Opening April 29th’s show at the Tufnell Park Dome will be out-punk thrashers No Form, so the speakers are going to be well and truly tested to their limits for this! Full listings for both concerts can be found in full below.

This week we also confirmed new concerts in July for Lucky Dragons and Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3, Spectrum, EAR).

Lucky Dragons is the long-term collaboration between LA-based artists Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara that investigates notions of participation, dissent and ritual through their inventive performances.

Whilst Sonic Boom, will be pursuing his verdant, visionary-hypnogogia with the help of Spectrum guitarist Jason Holt. Tickets on sale now!

WOLF EYES
AARON DILLOWAY
NO FORM
Friday 29 April
Tufnell Park Dome, 178 Junction Road, Tufnell Park, N19 5QQ
7.30pm | £10 | TICKETS

Thank you so much for attending our recent concerts for Normil Hawaiians and The Intelligence and to all of you who’ve been enjoying our new records by The World and Dog Chocolate. Have a fantastic weekend, thanks always for your time!
