UPSILON ACRUX
GUAPO
HONEY RIDE ME A GOAT
Friday 7 October
Cafe OTO, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL

UPSILON ACRUX is an instrumental quintet (dual guitars, keyboards, bass and drums). Their music is generally very intense, loud, hard-hitting and unbelievably virtuosic. Upsilon Acrux's music is demanding on many levels, but mostly it demands that you listen to it a number of times before forming an opinion, because only after you've gotten familiar with it can you get past the sheer complexity and onslaught of it all and hear the amazing musicality of what they are doing. This combination of blazingly fast, interwoven musical lines delivered at blinding speed mixed with their unique melodic sense makes Upsilon's music instantly recognisable.

GUAPO is a British trio that plays an intense music that straddles the boundaries of progressive, noise, minimalism and avant-rock. Their sound has been compared to such artists as Magma, Boredoms, King Crimson, Univers Zero, This Heat, Ruins, Sun Ra and Terry Riley. As Sound Projector put it, "Guapo come on like all the hellhounds of Magma, Eskaton and Ruins were after them...on a par with Magma’s Kohntarkosz or Univers Zero’s Ceux Du Dehors". The group started their life as a heavy bass/drums duo playing post-hardcore, noisy rock, but in the two decades since, they have expanded their instrumentation and their stylistic references to become one of Europe's most highly respected 'muscular and modern' experimental/progressive rock bands.

HONEY RIDE ME A GOAT come from Kent and seem obsessed with Indian Cuisine and hyper-complex rollercoaster jazz punk. Guitar, bass and drums freak out into an confounding and extremely tight onslaught which bursts with freedom, chaos, fun and nonsense all at the same time. HRMAG have a number of vinyl and CD releases available now on their band camp below.

CALVIN JOHNSON
(Selector Dub Narcotic)
CATENARY WIRES
SIDNEY
Monday 17 October
Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, 44 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB
7:30pm | £9 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/370998

CALVIN JOHNSON's work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station, KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K Records, a locally oriented media outlet, in 1982. In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic Studio in which he has documented the work of Mirah, the Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders and Dub Narcotic Sound System. The decade of the double zeroes saw Calvin Johnson set into the world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes. Now that the one-zeroes have hit, Calvin is working on his new project Selector Dub Narcotic. Selector Dub Narcotic is known to mix the genres dancehall, soul, punk, garage, R&B, rock steady, bubblegum and rockabilly with assorted curiosities of the current underground music scene.

THE CATENARY WIRES were formed in 2014 when Amelia and Rob (ex-Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research, Tender Trap) moved out of London. Unlike some of their earlier incarnations, THE CATENARY WIRES are minimalist, melancholy, and a little woozy. Originally forming the band just for themselves at home, Rob and Amelia started playing songs on their daughter's 3/4 size acoustic guitar. They are still refusing to give it back. The band agreed to play a first gig in public at the Arnolfini in Bristol, on 3 May 2014, in support of a new film about Sarah Records. Since then, they have played several shows around the UK, and will soon be performing in Tokyo, Madrid and New York. The Catenary Wires function as a simple two-piece live, but have created a lusher sound on their first album, Red Red Skies, which was released by Elefant Records last year.

SIDNEY began in friendship. George Haberis and Henry Withers have known each other for some time, even before playing in Lovvers and Prize Pets, and made music together as Sharm El Shakes; when the bass player moved to a rent controlled apartment in Manhattan they couldn't let their snappy union of incisively cracking guitar parts and observations about cities and the melancholy of romance be lost forever so they started Sidney with Prize Pets drummer Joe Coope & Robert "Sluggo" Hughes on Bass.
