PRIESTS are playing in London this May!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

PRIESTS
Thursday 25 May
The Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Rd, Dalston, E8 3AS

Priests are Daniele Daniele (drums), Katie Alice Greer (vocals), G.L. Jaguar (guitar), and Taylor Mulitz (bass). Formed in 2011 in Washington DC, the band has proven a valuable force for strangeness in a city that is increasingly terraformed by norms. At a time when few groups were making serious moves beyond the Beltway, Priests toured throughout North America and Europe. More significantly, they’ve helped to raise the general standard of show-going at home through cassettes and singles released on Sister Polygon, including music by bands like Sneaks, Snail Mail, Pinkwash, Cigarette, Downtown Boys, and numerous Priests-affiliated groups like Gauche and Flasher. Still, even amidst thriving hometown creativity, Priests possess a singular gravity. They are physical and combustible, urgent and visceral. This January, Nothing Feels Natural, the band’s first full length LP was released on their own label Sister Polygon Records. It’s the bands most stylistically diverse set of songs to date, expanding on their lo-fi post-punk bona-fides with ideas drawn from pop, R&B, and industrial noise. Thematically, Nothing can be understood as a series of vignettes — nine stories that crystallize into a bigger picture about the economics of human relationships, the invisibility of feminized labor, and the dual purpose of art for both the group and the individual. It’s a record that thrives amid the tension between that what is valued and what is dismissed; between what is desired and what is presented.

Another new show for you! I can't look more forward!

Wolf Eyes album launch in London!

Today let's thank the heavens for this newly confirmed colossus of a show for our favourite radical vibes trio! March 24th is album launch O'clock for Wolf Eyes.

Upset The Rhythm presents…

WOLF EYES - ‘Undertow’ Album launch
Friday 24 March
EXFED, Unit 4, 199 Eade Road, Manor House, London, N4 1DN

Wolf Eyes are the USA’s longest-running homemade, primitive, electronic, poetry & radical vibes trio. They don’t just release albums they launch scotched, taped nuclear audio fronts on humanity. Wolf Eyes dropped a behemoth of a record last year with ‘I Am A Problem: Mind In Pieces’ on Jack White’s Third Man Records, but this time they are switching things up in more ways than one for their forthcoming Undertow album. The Detroit dark ambient sculptors are launching a new imprint called Lower Floor Music, and the album will be the first release on the label. The first foray into the new album is the title track, which is self-described as a “sea-bottom R&B sound lurch” featuring ambient synth and haunting spoken vocals. This show acts as an official album launch, celebrating the release of ‘Undertow’ into the world.

New London show for NOTS announced!

We're very happy to announce that NOTS will be coming back to London this June!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

NOTS
Wednesday 7 June
Cafe OTO, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | £8 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/389238

NOTS are a 4 piece, all XX, “nuevo no wavo” band from Memphis, TN. Unpredictable guitars, celestial synths, and punctuated vocals swirl around the repetition of a powerful rhythm section to form a sound and a live show not easily classifiable but entirely addictive. Drummer Charlotte Watson and guitarist / frontwoman Natalie Hoffmann are the band’s two constants throughout a handful of roster changes. NOTS’ current lineup also includes Alexandra Eastburn on synth, an instrument she picked up to join NOTS and to record on their first full-length LP We Are Nots, and bassist Meredith Lones, another new Memphis musician, and the most recent addition to the band. NOTS’ newest punk-noise-psych-collision LP, ‘Cosmetic’, aggressively follows on the heels of their debut LP, foreshadowing an ever expanding experiment in direction of things to come for the band. NOTS have releases on Heavenly and Goner Records, plus a brand new live 7” on Third Man.

Mary Ocher - London show announced!

We're so happy to have Mary Ocher come back to London this April! Tickets just released.

Upset The Rhythm presents…

MARY OCHER
Thursday 5 April
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £6 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/388344

MARY OCHER was born Mariya Ocheretianskaya in Moscow in 1986, she moved to Israel with her family at age four, then to Berlin at 20. In 2011 she caught the attention of the inimitable King Khan at a karaoke bar (he also lives in Berlin), and she recorded what's still her most recent full-length of new material, 2013's Eden, at his Moon Studios. He's not her only famous fan either: Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs contributed a quote to Ocher's press kit. "Mary Ocher gives me the chills," she says. "She frightens me with her feral soul. Her sound is of a true outsider artist, immaculately self-possessed”. Her DIY roots and anything-goes aesthetic notwithstanding, Ocher is obviously too well-connected to qualify as an outsider. Ocher’s songs are a diverse bunch ranging from ghostly noise, sad but jaunty piano ballads, frisky strumming, echoing ersatz funk to chintzy drum machine workouts with vacuum-cleaner synth. Ocher herself seems to have as many faces as a vaudeville performer: her multifarious singing leaps without warning from unhinged keening to warped drawling or from wobbly muttering to blustery declaiming. Forthcoming album, ‘The West Against The People’ has been produced with Faust’s Hans Joachim Irmler and also features tracks with Ocher’s drummers – duo Your Government – as well as collaborations with avant-garde legends Die Tödliche Doris, Felix Kubin and Julia Kent of Rasputina/Antony and The Johnsons. It’s out March 10 on krautrock label Klangbad.

Rat Columns & Feature albums coming out on Upset The Rhythm soon!

Upset The Rhythm are ecstatic to announce two new albums that we’ll be releasing over the coming months! Rat Columns have a new album called ‘Candle Power’ due out in March, whilst Feature’s debut record ‘Banishing Ritual’ will be released in early April! You can listen to tracks from both records and pre-order both titles in our webshop, as of now!

Rat Columns is the mutable musical project of David West, an artist as prolific as he is diverse in his output. West is the driving force behind the groups Rank/Xerox, Liberation and Lace Curtain, he was also a member of Total Control, and most recently debuted a solo album proper. Whether its forward-facing punk or turning his hand to crafting sleek prisms of pop, West’s credentials check out. ‘Candle Power’ sees the band’s universe of chiming guitar plenitude explode into new worlds of colour and shade. It’s an album as happy to walk home in the rain as it is to reel dizzily through daylight, tunnelling further than ever down the pop mainline, cutting in with moments of soul, disco and experimental plots.

Feature were, as they are sadly no more active, a trio of drone-pop purveyors: Liv Willars, Jen Calleja (also of Sauna Youth, Monotony, Gold Foil) and Heather Perkins (also of Slowcoaches). Their stunning debut album ‘Banishing Ritual’ stakes out minimal, menacing punk terrain alongside a fast flowing river of melodious garage-pop. Calleja’s lyrics are sparse narratives: a love song for a twin consumed in the womb, the stalking of a doppelganger, a tongue-in-cheek look at jealousy and bitter competitiveness. Though Calleja provides a leading vocal throughout, all three members sing on most songs to create unmatchable and unexpected vocal harmonies, plus friend and fellow London DIY musician Joey Fourr provides his immense vocal range on two tracks.

New records from Terry, Vexx & Xiu Xiu, plus upcoming shows!

Hello everyone!
I hope twenty seventeen has been treating you well so far, the snow has just stirred us from hibernation so prepare for an information overload. No news is good news, except in this case!
Today our first release of the year makes it’s way into the wide world. 8 Girls by Terry was originally released last year by our friends at Aarght Records in Australia and was snapped up like cakes on fire. Featuring some of the band’s most rabble-rousing numbers we felt it deserved a proper European pressing and lo and behold that’s what we’ve gone and sorted. Hitting the shops as of this morning, 8 Girls appears now on transparent vinyl with a card sleeve featuring new synthetic-lake-based artwork, oh yes! We also have copies currently lighting up our webshop here.
Talking of records, our long-awaited Vexx mini-album Wild Hunt, will be arriving with us in the next few days too (it is currently on a plane over the Atlantic). Our kind comrades at Monorail Records in Glasgow must harbour some uncanny powers of logic as they’ve named it their album of the month and are offering if for sale alongside a limited edition screenprint of the ghoul-fest cover art by the band’s whip-crack of a vocalist Maryjane Dunphe. Check that out!
Yesterday saw us unveil another new track from our forthcoming Xiu Xiu album too. Entitled 'Jenny GoGo', the hauntingly catchy ode is accompanied by an eye-zipping animated video made in collaboration with Emp. Bikutoru. Look out!
The album proper, titled Forget, will be released on February 24th, very exciting news! Plus we still have a handful of copies left of our blue/white swirled mailorder-only edition of LP, so if that is of interest it’s off to the webshop with you, post-haste.
Right, getting back to the show promotions side of things, Upset The Rhythm have just confirmed a London date for Spinning Coin & Sacred Paws’ February tour: Glasgow representing!
You can find that show outlined in our listings section below, along with upcoming events for HEXA (Jamie Stewart & Lawrence English’s sonic response to David Lynch’s photography), Graham Dunning, Cian Nugent, Mega Bog, Milky Wimpshake, Witching Waves and of course our impending concerts for Carla dal Forno and Deerhoof which are both elaborated on next. Here you go…

CARLA DAL FORNO
GROSS NET
UTR DJs
Saturday 4 February
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £6 | TICKETS
CARLA DAL FORNO is an Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, currently based in Berlin. She is a member of the groups F ingers and Tarcar, and formerly cult Melbourne outfit Mole House. Autumn 2016 saw the release of her debut solo album, 'You Know What It's Like', on Blackest Ever Black. 'You Know What It's Like' is an album for inbetween days, and occupies inbetween states: plain-speaking pop, disorientated by dub. Psychedelic folk delivered with (post-)punk economy. Drifting in space while still tethered to the ground. Astral tones blurred with earth sounds: wood, bone, breath, skin, dirt. Ending and beginning, dying and becoming. Longing for adventure and an unquiet life. Struggling to get out of bed.
GROSS NET is a solo project by Philip Quinn (Girls Names) from Northern Ireland, he serves up industrial, noisy post-punk and his 3 track debut EP on Art For Blind announces his arrival in menacing style. In just 11 minutes distorted guitars, ambient synths and reverbed vocals lay the foundations for lyrical themes of living through the recession and elitism in the arts channeling influences such as Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, and Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft.

Upset The Rhythm presents…
DEERHOOF
LE TON MITÉ
Monday 6 February
Village Underground, 54 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3PQ
7.30pm |  £14 | TICKETS
DEERHOOF are an alchemy of '77 punk, pop, glam, hair metal, doo-wop, hip hop, and R&B, late-night car rides, long days, spandex, shadows, and attitude. Poetry into noise, volume knobs into pleasure, friendship into rock band.Twenty years deep into their career it's safe to describe them as legends of the American underground, releasing 14 albums and treating the world to their never-the-same-twice thrill-ride of a live show. Recent album 'The Magic' is out now on Upset The Rhythm, it is a mixtape imbued with Deerhoof's sorcery; boldness, wonder, technical know-how, risk. A mixtape by the kid with the biggest music collection you've ever seen, who will take you camping and show you how to pull a rabbit out of a hat. Are Deerhoof the greatest live band in the world? If you shake the Magic 8-ball, “all signs point to yes”!

LE TON MITÉ is a band led by McCloud Zicmuse, translated into English the project’s name equates “the moth tone”. After many years of activity in the American independent music scene from Olympia, Washington, Mr. Zicmuse lived a clandestine life in France and abroad before finding roots in Belgium. A frequent collaborator with groups such as Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Mt Eerie & Tenniscoats, he is also known for his home made instruments and as a guest bassoonist for Chris Cohen, Deerhoof & Konono No. 1. This last year McCloud Zicmuse has been traveling, touring, writing, playing, transforming his solo project into a group & recording a collection of songs to be released next month called “Passé Composé Futur Conditionnel”. Le Ton Mité write songs that are a microcosm of adventure, packed with curious sounds and mini compositions, yet resolutely pop!

Here’s to an eventful year! Thanks for reading and…
